It appears that Google will soon abandon the HDMI dongle design found in all of its previous streaming devices in favor of a more traditional set-top box. 9 to 5Pictures of the future gadget, which goes by the name "Google TV Streamer," have been released by Google. Thus, not only is the design of previous Chromecasts disappearing, but also the name.
The style of the new gadget is consistent with other recent gear from Google and features a slanted top. The bundled remote is longer and features a volume rocker directly on the face of the device, but it is otherwise mostly identical to the one that came with the previous generation Chromecast.
Along with a lengthy list of other devices, such as the Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 9, Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 3 XL, and maybe some other surprises, the Google TV Streamer is expected to make its debut at the company's hardware presentation on August 13.
I have been anticipating the release of a more potent streaming player from Google that might pose a serious threat to the Apple TV 4K. Introduced in 2020, the Chromecast with Google TV never quite made it, leaving the Nvidia Shield as the superior option in terms of performance. We'll all know more in a few weeks as to whether the Google TV Streamer maintains Google's customary under-$100 price point or raises the stakes.
