Spotify Returns to Offering More Lyrics for Free Users, But There's a Monthly Cap: Report

 According to Spotify, the maximum amount of lyrics that can be downloaded each month for free is "higher than anyone would ever reach."

The Swedish audio streaming firm Spotify has announced that it is reintroducing a feature that users have been clamoring for months after it was taken off of the free tier and placed behind a paywall. After much criticism, the lyrics function is now available to Spotify non-subscribers; nevertheless, there will still be a monthly cap. The announcement of the development comes weeks after the business revealed its intentions to launch a new "deluxe" subscription tier that would provide customers with high-fidelity audio streaming.

Spotify Lyrics Go Back to the Free Plan

 
First announced in September 2023, Spotify would no longer offer lyrics for free users. This announcement came after a wave of complaints about the service's accessibility on social media and community forums in May of this year. After this modification, viewing lyrics would need a Spotify Premium subscription if free users listened to more than three songs.

For those without a premium subscription, Spotify is bringing back lyrics, a representative for the music streaming service told TechCrunch. The representative stated, "We'll be expanding lyrics availability for Spotify free users over the coming weeks so more people can enjoy viewing more lyrics, globally."

Without a paid membership, Spotify will not, however, provide unrestricted access to lyrics. A corporate official told 9to5Google that the figure is "higher than anyone would ever reach," even if the exact limit was not stated. It is anticipated that the modifications will be implemented on the platform in the upcoming weeks.

According to the music streaming service's earnings call for the second quarter of 2024, just 246 million of its 626 million monthly active listeners are paid users. This indicates that over 50% of Spotify's user population is still using the free plan.

In recent months, the corporation has also increased prices. For the second time in a year, Spotify Premium subscription prices increased in the US in June. The Individual plan, which had previously cost $10.99 (about Rs. 920), now costs $11.99 (nearly Rs. 1,003) each month.
